Musings

OK, let's talk about Punk Rock for a bit.

Being self employed and starting up a business can be draining on the funds and on the time that could be spent earning funds.

However being a punk (which I am) means that DIY is important. I'm not making any claims that punks have sturdier shelves than everyone else (just that the contents are cooler). No, DIY extends to more than changing a door or laying some carpet. It's the notion that one doesn't have to wait for permission to do cool things.

For a comedian to wait for a TV channel to pick them up and have them make a pilot or something was once the only conceivable option. Luckily, this is no longer the case.

The phone you may well be reading this very blog on could probably film something simple and upload it to YouTube or Facebook with out breaking a technological sweat.

There are free/cheap apps that can make totally serviceable video/audio output.

I am a big fan of podcasting. The general idea of it. It's excellent. (Of course the number of so-called fans of podcasts who only talk about them in complaints about 'mouth noise' and 'not editing out all the umms and ahhs' seem to be missing every point ever.) It's so excellent that I started a podcast panel show. I mainly started it because I assumed I'd never be asked to be on any of the ones I liked.

And that's the main point of this unconnected ramble. You can either decide to wait for permission or you can just do it.

Punk rock is one of the main influences on my life. I've not always followed the DIY ethos for various reasons but I'm back to it now with more dedication than ever with many more projects that I want to start and the people I want to start them with.

I know that not everyone has access to or can afford even the basic tools needed for what I've described and I'm afraid I've no answer as to what can be done about that.

As with everything in these blogs, I'll only be speaking for me and what I know.
